On Wednesday, August 24 in the Ball Communications Building freshman Emma Winget, 18, awaited her next class. She is going through all the first-time experiences of a college freshman, such as being away from home.
“I came to Ball State because of the good Teachers College and it’s only an hour away from home, so it is not too close but not too far either,” said Winget.
Although college can be overwhelming, she has friends from high school who attend this school as well. To help her meet new people, she decided to go with the random roommate option while living in the Northwest dorm, which is one of the newer housing editions at Ball State.
In addition to adjusting to dorm life, Winget chose to be an elementary education major. She has always enjoyed being around children and wants to turn it into a career and be a kindergarten teacher.
“I have seven younger siblings and I’ve always been around younger children. I also sat in a few kindergarten classes in my junior year of high school, it would be so fun to teach them all the important things,” Winget said.
Winget has big goals for her freshman year of college and wants to continue getting good grades like the ones she got in high school. She is not sure what organizations she would want to get involved in yet, but is hopeful about joining one sometime. Along with college goals, she uses the advice her mother gave her to help get her through her days since starting university.
“I want to try to have all As but I don’t know if that will happen, I will try my best. Before I left for school she always told me ‘make good decisions and don’t be dumb’. She even wrote it on the whiteboard on my mini fridge as a reminder,” Winget said.
