Jane the Virgin is an American telenovela created by Jennie Snyder Urman. The show is based upon the 2002 telenovela, Juana la Virgen. The show features an outstanding cast consisting of people like Gina Rodriguez, who plays the main character, the actors have the strong ability to portray such strong emotion and the original story lines connect that have characters from various background, the audience and makes them feel what the characters feel.
The cast is filled with amazing talents such as Ivonne Coll, who has played in The Godfather sequel, Switched at Birth and Lean On Me. Although for Actor Justin Baldoni (Rafael Solano) and Actress Yael Grobglas (Petra Solano) these roles have really exploited their talents and put them on the map.
The show highlights topics such as kidnapping, religion, and immigration. In today’s society, these topics can be a touchy subject or hard to cover. Golden Globe Award Winner Gina Rodriguez is able to display true emotion to the audience. In the aftermath of her husband’s death, the day after their wedding, Jane is seen getting off of an elevator and sitting on a lobby chair. She is in the midst of realizing this could be the end of her husband’s life (season 3 episode 1).
Jane the Virgin features characters from various backgrounds such as America, “Abuela” from Venezuela and Petra Solano from the Czech Republic. The various backgrounds presented in the show add to the wholesomeness and diversity of the show. The show still keeps in its certain telenovela roots by having “Abuela” speaking spanish mainly most of the time.
Many classic telenovelas are only in spanish since they are mainly for Latinos. Telenovela loosely translates to “television story” but it is often referred to as a Latin American soap opera. Telenovelas like Rebelde and La Esclava Blanca feature very dramatic acting but this show does not have that. The acting is not too overbearing but the cast still finds the perfect way to hook in the audience.
Jane the Virgin is the perfect mix of suspense, comedy and joy for viewer’s pleasure. The best part of the show is the enthusiastic narrator of the show who provides background knowledge and comedic insight. One of his most popular catchphrases is, “Straight out of a telenovela, right?” to remind watchers that this show is indeed a telenovela.
The CW has done it again with yet another hit show. The finale of season four was sure to shock viewers with the return of Jane’s deceased husband, Michael. Many have expressed their thoughts on what will happen next. No matter what the outcome is for the show it is seen through production that the cast values their characters, the diversity of the cast and story lines show how much effort was put into this show and the show is not like a regular telenovela. A fair rating would be four out of five stars because although the show is amazing, nothing is perfect. The show could elaborate on certain characters, such as “Milos”, and delve deeper into trending topics like the struggles of homosexuality and complications with immigration. Jane the Virgin is very much worthy of being binge watched and will have new audience’s tuning in to see what happens next religiously.
