Nappily Ever After starring renowned actress Sanaa Lathan plays Violet, a woman who must always be perfect and that starts with her hair. Everything starts to go downhill when her hair, proposal, career, and relationship are all ruined. This movie is great for teaching young girls of all colors to love the hair you are born in. I would give the movie a four out of five stars for its strong message, great backstories, and amazing sense of humor. Lathan's costars Lyriq Bent, who you may recognize from "She's Gotta Have it" and "Acrimony", and Lynn Whitfield do a great job at capturing the essence of two perspectives of natural hair. Bent's character,Will, appreciates natural hair and products deeply. I loved this character because he offers a deeper meaning to hair than just a texture. Whitfield's character, Pauletta, demonstrates the need for straight perfection. The moral of the movie gives a message that it's all about a choice. That's the most important part about being yourself. IT'S YOU. If you want a perm, get a perm. If you want an afro let it all out. It's up to you and this movie enhances choices or the lack thereof. Besides the movie's outstanding message in the plot I did not like the ending too much. I didn't get the happily ever after that I expected from the two love interests. I'm a hopeless romantic, okay. I need my big kiss in the rain scene. Or the boom box over the head, praying for a second chance scene. I live for those moments and I was really hoping that Violet and Will would kiss and change the world "one head at a time". That's the only reason I give the movie a four out of five. Other than the ending, I believe it had exquisite acting and was definitely worth my time.
