Ruby Rose: chef, innovator and caretaker

Imagine cooking dinner for over twenty people every year and being sure that everyone is pleased with the dishes while trying to stay calm. Ruby Rose is the matriarch of her family and has been cooking Thanksgiving dinner for over fifty years.

By: Jaeda Dixson

Four kids, nine grandkids and fourteen great-grandkids. All gather each year for family time and homemade southern cooking. The kitchen is filled with a many people hugging and laughing while the smell of greens and macaroni and cheese fills everyone’s noses. They are all anxious for the food to be ready. Plastic cups, silverware and plates are on every table to cut down on dishes. The head of the house Ruby Rose is rushing around the kitchen to get everything done as soon as possible.

“Thanksgiving is probably the most stressful holiday for her but somehow she gets the job done,” said Daughter of Rose Lisa Capler.

Rose always makes the turkey and the dressing every year. The kids will help with side dishes to make her life easier. Aside from the food, the holidays are always held at her house. Cleaning the house and making it spotless is also very time consuming.

“I have a bad back and I try my best to dust and clean, but it can be so overwhelming that it takes almost three days to finish everything,” said Rose.

All four of her kids try to explain that they are willing to do more on the holiday, but Rose refuses the help. It is “quality time to gather thoughts” and gets to create a homely environment for her family.

“I don’t mind doin’ all the work even though it hurts me, it makes me happy knowin’ I get to help my babies” said Rose.

When it comes to the day of the feast, Rose does not regret a single hardship. She enjoys getting her entire family together and making them smile. If it were up to her, she would do this every week. Her family means everything to her and Thanksgiving is the perfect day to show her major appreciation.
